Old mill at DeCew Falls 2013.

My team and I hiked inside of the mine when we were half way up the stone embankment. Instantly, there was a temperature drop as we set foot in the cold, damp, musky smelling mine shaft. The bottom of the mine was flooded with about a foot of water, so we used the rocks on the ground as steps until we made it to the old train track which was pretty rusty and slippery. There was also a lot of mist blowing from the large DeCew Falls and making its way into the mine shaft making it even more slippery for walking. With that said, the tunnel itself had a certain mystique to it--dreary, yet alive, cozy, yet scary...at least in the darkness!

What were we hoping to see besides filming for the TV show? Rumor or legend had it that there were apparitions that roamed inside the mine shaft. In the past, hikers have reported seeing people, which they would later deduce to be apparitions, walk inside of the tunnel and disappear. When we were inside the entrance of the mine shaft, we could only go in so far, as the tunnel is then locked off by a large, thick, metal gate. So were these people who saw these apparitions confused, assuming that they disappeared into thin air? After all, the gate was not always there, so is it safe to say they were other hikers just going into the tunnel and checking things out for themselves? Okay, let's put things in perspective.
